General Information
Kirkpatrick Macmillan, 1812-1878 saw a hobbyhorse being ridden and decided to make one for himself, he realised what an improvement it would be if he could propel it without putting his feet on the ground, he completed his new machine in around 1839. It was propelled by a horizontal movement of the rider's feet on the pedals and transmitted to cranks on the rear wheel by connecting rods; the machine was extremely heavy. He did not bother to patent it and was happy for other people to build their own copies of his machine. This example is in Coventry transport museum.
