| The
Vainqueur 999 De Luxe was the anodized version of the engraved
Vainqueur 999 brakes, coming in silver, red, or blue anodization. The
Vainqueur 999 De Luxe had no engraving of the caliper lettering as did
the non-anodized standard version. The De Luxe had 'Weinmann Vainqueur
999' block printed on the forward caliper arm, and the red caliper bolt
washers may be lettered "Weinmann De Luxe" (but not always). The
Vainqueur 999 brakes came in 750 and 610 caliper arm lengths. The first
two digits are the middle point of the reach, being 75mm and 61mm
respectively. The
1969 Handbook of Cycl-ology [new revised edition, Wheel Goods
Corporation, Minneapolis, Minnesota] lists two version designs, using
Weinmann-origin exploded diagrams, dating the one spring version until
December 1962, and the two spring version from December 1962 to
September 1964. There are other differences between the two versions:
pivot bolts, yoke, center bolt. The one spring version has screw-in
pivot bolts, whereas the two spring version has pivots mounted on the yoke. The
one spring version has a flat front side to the yoke so that the single
spring can span across between pivots. The two spring version has a
shaped front side to the yoke to provide flats to hold the center bolt
from turning, and detents for each spring to lay. The one spring center
bolt has a round head and a groove underneath the head for the spring to
pass. The two spring center bolt has two flat sides to prevent turning. |

Founded in 1933 in the swiss Schaffhausen by Otto Weinmann, very close the border to Germany, over the years Weinmann became a very well reputated and one of the world leading lightweight bicyle parts builder, focused on brakes and later rims (in the 1960s the Weinmann colle rims became very famous). In the 1960s Weinmann delivered DiaCompe with brake parts and in the 1970's and 1980's this cooperation lasted in the production of Weinmann's top modell Carrera. At the date of the 40th company anniversary they had more than 700 employees and two affiliated companies in Singen, Germany (Weinmann & Co. KG) and Schoten, Belgium. After the swiss location has been closed in 1991 business activities were administrated from the German subsidiary in Singen.
