Model General Information |
The two-tone cream and navy blue paint with a sort of an art deco detail and gold pinstripes makes me real sure this was a model made specifically for export to the US. There is no white on the rear fender which was required in the UK in this era (Even on chrome fenders!) If this is was built after the TI/ Raliegh take-over, it doesn't show. There are no parts recognizable as Raleigh that I could see. It also has an axle to axle wheelbase of 43.5", the Raleigh and Humber I measured are a little over 41"
The rims are double wall chrome steel 26 x 1 3/8 Dunlops. 32 spokes in front with an unmarked hub, a 40 spoke rear with a Sturmey Archer 3 speed coaster brake hub marked -CW 55 1 It has a 3 piece cottered rank with a generic looking 46 tooth sprocket ...no Norman head profiles :( The lugging on the frame is very plain stamped steel with only triangular cut-outs. The crank housing is sand cast steel with an oil hole. The joints are (sloppily) braised. The rear drop-outs are stamped with a single hole for mounting the fenders, there are no front drop-outs, the fork ends are crimped flat with stamped cut-outs for the front axle. The headset is unusual, What would normally be the upper and lower races that press into the head tube are thin walled cups. The races are separate pieces that can pivot inside these cups, presumably to eliminate having to match the top and bottom of the head tube on the frame. This model came with a spacer in the top of the headset instead of a lamp holder bracket. The High Road bars have a sightly shorter grip area then the Raliegh's and the stem is unique with a cast head. It was equipped with a single side-pull front brake with no adjusters, the only markings on the brake or lever are "Made in England" The chainguard is quite large, coming down almost to the the chainstay. The chrome fenders are also quite large with round braces. The front has a comb similar to the Raleigh.
This thing is a TANK!
