Not to be confused with the Rim manufature which was eventually owned by Wolber, the Super Champion Derailleur was created by Oscar Egg in the early 1930's. |
The derailleur brand of Oscar Egg, one of the giants of cycling history and a former Swiss track rider who once held the world Hour record . In 1932 he introduced the Champion derailleur which was developed in his shop in the Paris, France suburb of Levallois-Perret. Their "Tour de France" model, with a shifting fork below the chainstay
and a manually-operated chain tensioner beneath the bottom bracket, was
by far the most popular racing derailleur of the 1930s. By 1934 they
were selling 45,000 derailleurs per year. In 1936 they made 343,209
derailleurs. It was his derailleur and its success which pressured the organizers of the Tour de France to allow the use of derailluers in the race starting in 1937. By 1939 they had sold over 1,000,000 derailleurs. However, after WW2 they failed to keep up with Simplex and Huret, and by 1955 they were gone.
