General Information
This is possibly GB’s best known stem, fitted as original equipment to just about every make of British lightweight at some time or another during the 50s and 60s. It was initially only available in 2¾" and 3½" lengths, with 2” and 4” versions added later. The 2” stem had a 5 1/8" shaft, 5½" for all the others. It was only offered in 1”/25.4mm clamp size for 7/8”/22.2mm quills. It does not seem to have ever been given its own definitive name (unlike GB’s later-production metric-spec stems) so tends to be variously called ‘Alloy Spearpoint’, ‘Standard’ or ‘Hiduminium’, although that latter is what it’s made of rather than its model designation (hiduminium being a term coined for a type of aluminium – alluminum if you prefer(!) – alloy developed for airframe use during WW2). The catalogues mostly just seem to call it ‘alloy stem’. It is a forged stem with an oval-section tubular extension. By the early 60s it had replaced GB’s earlier, girder-section stem, although the girder model was offered alongside it for some time as their shortest available extension (1¾"). The example shown has been drilled for a centre-pull front brake, a common DIY mod and often done to a high engineering standard and so easily mistaken for a factory specification.
