In my opinion, the most elegant of all brake levers as well as being very well made. Very easy to disassemble, there are 2 small brass screws holding the cable-end barrel in place, the pivot-bolt holding the lever to the body and 2 retaining bolts into the handlebar clip with which to better secure the lever at the bend of the handlebars.
The name translates as 'The King of the Climbers' and the spur at the top of the lever is for hooking a finger under when climbing, perhaps related to Gino Bartali's habit of remaining seated when climbing rather than getting out of the saddle and dancing like most others. Bartali won several Giri d'Italia and wore the Yellow Jersey in a couple of Tours de France.
Thanks to Fancylugs' comments below, I now know that the second lever pictured, without any brand markings, is a Gloria (and not a later version of the Bartali Roi des Grimpeurs as I had previously written) and I would think a later model. It does away with the cable-end barrel altogether, the cable end simply threading through a hole in the lever and has just one retaining clip bolt. It is also a little heavier at 116 g.
I have just been made aware that the manufacturer was a company called L. BARRAL, situated in Cagnes-sur-Mer, near Nice in the South of France. It's actually written on the photos I took for this entry. I don't know how I missed that. Also, that the model is given on the box, too: 'modele Bartali'. So it would seem that these are the Bartali model of Roi des Grimpeurs levers made by L. Barral. |
