General Information

SunTour took the V T-Luxe and replaced the last bits of steel with aluminum pieces, and slimmed down some of the parts to a slimmer and neater package, the result was the Vx.
----
The first V was made in about 1970.

Disraeligears shows a Vx first type as 1976 only, in medium 59mm cage length without the quickcage or the pillar to stop the cage rotating too far back.

The Vx second type is shown by Disraeligears in 1977 and by Ron Kitching in 1984 (unchanged?) in three lengths:

RD-2200 Vx    (short 47mm no quickcage)   200g 26T cog / 24T wrap
RD-2500 Vx-S (med 59mm quickcage)  213g.  Suganoya.net 26T/27T. RonKit'84 26T/28T wrap. Suntour say 30T cog /28T wrap on long 29mm hanger.
RD-2400 Vx-GT (long quickcage)  Suganoya.net and RonKit'84 give 34T/34T.

My RD-2500 is neatly stamped "BB" in a circle, =1985 Feb. if that is a date so I have set '85 as end of production.
In 1986 the SVX came in - similar design but with a dark anodised swing plate, sculpted 55mm non-quick cage, same 210g.
I scored it Excellent because its performance was brilliant in its price range, the design lasted 9 years with only minor mods in the first year, and allowing for the odd pulley replacement they are often still working fine after 30 years of pampering by highly trained mechanics

SunTour (Maeda)

SunTour derailleurs have a two-letter date code. On rear derailleurs the code is stamped on the back side of the inner parallel arm. On front derailleurs it is stamped on the back side of the inner cage.

The first letter represents the year. Larry Osborn and I believe O (Oh) is 1972, V is 1979 and A is 1984. As with Shimano, the second letter is the month code, where A is January and L is December.

The earliest Suntour derailleur I have found with a code is marked OF. A rear derailleur marked OD (corresponding to April of 72) was reported by Leighton Walter. I have a bike that dates from between 1970 to 1972 that has the original SunTour derailleurs. These derailleurs do not have date codes on them, so I believe the coding started sometime between 1970 and April of 1972.
