Simplex SELEMATIC 5
Back
Details
Short Name:SELEMATIC 5Year Introduced:1981
Speed Range:5spIndexed Component:Shifter
General Information
A truly strange attempt at index shifting by Simplex.  Apparently they were caught off guard by Shimano's early Positron shifting system, this is what Simplex answered with.  Like the Positron system the indexing mechanism is built into the rear derailleur while the shifter is a spring loaded friction style shifter.  The shifter includes a numeric gear position indicator.  From looking at what information I have been able to find on the shifter and derailleur combination it is hard to determine if it uses a standard thickness shifting cable, or a heavier cable such as the early Positron systems used.  Disraeli Gears has an interesting set of illistrations from the US Patent application for the SELEMATIC 5 system.  Looking over them it shows that there was a stem shifter in addition to the clamp on drop bar shifter which I have listed on VeloBase.com.

Generally in Indexed systems, either the shifting or the derailleur component contains the indexing logic. Here is a list of components currently on VeloBase.com which utilize the Simplex SELEMATIC 5 shifting mechanism.
