This tool threads into the freewheel body and allows injection of grease into the freewheel body using a standard "Zerk" type grease gun. This makes for a very quiet freewheel and helps prevent moisture penetration into the freewheel bearings. A light grease must be used, particularly in cool climates, or the pawls may not catch the freewheel body, causing it to freewheel in both directions. The tool was originally distributed by Phil Wood, who recommended their own brand of grease. This may have been fine in California and other warm areas, but those of us in the Northern latitudes found a lighter grease to work better.
