C S Milne & Co Ltd were (and still are) a huge manufacturer of gas-related tools and products. They produced some excellent bicycle lamps in the 1940s. However, they also made some brilliant early multi-tools. The one shown has cut outs for two different pedal sizes, two headset sizes, four bolt sizes and four cone sizes, as well as two pin spanners (one for bottom brackets and a smaller size). Sadly the pins are blunted and bent on this example. This example shown was found in a bicycle tool box that had not been opened since 1969 and show that it had been used quite vigerously before then (most of the cut-outs are bent or scuffed and the pins are very worn and bent). |
C S Milne & Co were based at the Harley Works on Octavius Street, Deptford (South London). As far as is known, the Harley works has little to do witht the Harley Davison motorbike company. They made and make anything to do with gas (mostly welding tools). However, they also made gas-carbide bicycle lamps and tools. Some of their hand and bicycle lamps are highly sought after by gas and oil lamp collecters. They now manufacture gas welding, cutting and scientific tools in Leicester.
